This modern gouache illustration depicting Ibn
al-Nafis is titled “Discovery of the ‘Small Circulation’”—the movement of blood
from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs and back to the left atrium.
It was Ibn al-Nafis who first correctly described the interaction of the heart
and lungs in circulation and oxygenation of blood.
